Leveling Casters: What They Are & How to Choose

The complete buyer’s guide — types, load capacity, materials and how to buy direct from the factory

A leveling caster is a swivel caster wheel with a built-in adjustable leveling pad. You roll the equipment into position on the wheels, then wind the pad down until it lifts the wheels clear of the floor and takes the weight. The machine is then solid and level while it runs — but can still be moved whenever you need to. This page explains how they work, how to size one, what they are made of, and what it costs to buy direct from a factory.

What is a leveling caster?

A leveling caster does two jobs at once:

  • A caster wheel — so the equipment can be repositioned by one person, without a pallet truck, a crane or a shutdown.
  • An adjustable leveling pad — a foot mounted on a thread that winds down by hand until it takes the load off the wheel and sits flat on the floor.

Because the pad lifts the wheels off the floor, the machine stops rocking, creeping and vibrating. That matters for anything with a spindle, a laser, a precision vice, a liquid tank or a calibrated scale — equipment that has to be movable during setup but rock-solid while running.

In North America and Europe the most common name for this product is leveling caster. The same item is also sold as a Fuma wheel — a widely used generic name for the caster-plus-pad design, especially in Asia and on B2B marketplaces — and as a Footmaster-style caster, after one of the best-known brand names in the category. There is no technical difference between the three terms. See the FAQ for the full explanation.

How a leveling caster works

The action is always the same three steps — roll, level, lock:

Step 1 — Roll

All pads are wound up, so the equipment runs on the caster wheels. One person moves it into position.

Step 2 — Level

Wind each pad down until it touches the floor and lifts the wheel off it. Adjust pad by pad until the machine reads level.

Step 3 — Lock

The pad now carries the load. The machine sits rigid on four (or more) fixed feet — no rocking, no creep, no wheel-flat vibration.

Leveling caster vs. standard caster vs. leveling foot

These three products solve different problems. Choosing the wrong one is the most common specification mistake.

Product Moves? Levels? Best for
Standard caster Yes No Carts and trolleys that only ever need to roll
Leveling foot / foot cup No Yes Static machines that are installed once
Leveling caster Yes Yes Machines that must be mobile for setup but rigid in operation — welding tables, CNC, test rigs, medical and food equipment

Types of leveling casters

By mounting type

  • Top plate — four bolt holes, bolts straight onto a flat frame or leg. Highest load capacity and the most common choice. DC-F / DC-FH series, 50–1,500 kg.
  • Threaded stem — an M8 to M16 stud that screws into an existing threaded socket or tube. No drilling, fastest to fit. DC-S series, 50–1,000 kg.
  • Triangular plate — a compact three-hole plate for tight corners and narrow legs. DC-FS series, 250–500 kg.
  • Low center of gravity — a low-profile body with a screw rod, for workbenches, tool cabinets and anything top-heavy that could tip. DC-600 / DC-800 / DC-1000, 150–800 kg.
  • Stainless steel — for wash-down, food processing and clean-room environments where plated parts would corrode. DCST series, 272–590 kg.
  • Adjustable support caster with foot cup — a rounded housing with an integral foot cup, used on display stands and light carts. DCP series, 100–120 kg.

By load capacity

Per-caster capacity is how leveling casters are actually bought. Use the table below to jump straight to a range.

Per caster Series Mounting Typical use
50 kg (110 lb) DC-40F / DC-40S / DCA-40F Plate, stem Small instrument carts, stands, display units
150 kg (330 lb) DC-600 Screw rod Low-profile workbenches, carts
250 kg (550 lb) DC-60F / DC-60S / DC-60FH Plate, stem Medical equipment, test benches, assembly carts
500 kg (1,100 lb) DC-80F / DC-80S / DC-80FH Plate, stem CNC machines, compressors, battery cabinets
600–800 kg (1,320–1,760 lb) DC-800 / DC-1000 Screw rod Heavy tool cabinets, machine bases, live storage
750 kg (1,655 lb) DC-100F / DC-100S / DCA-100F Plate, stem Welding tables, press brakes, heavy machine tools
1,000 kg (2,205 lb) DC-120S Stem Very heavy fabrication and fixture tables
1,100 kg (2,425 lb) DCT-80 / DCU-80 Plate, swivel Heavy low center of gravity industrial bases
1,500 kg (3,305 lb) DC-150F Plate Extreme duty machinery, die carts, large weldments

How to choose the right leveling caster

Four checks, in this order:

  1. Work out the load per caster. Divide the total equipment weight by the number of casters, then add 30–50%. A 1,200 kg machine on four casters needs at least 300 kg each, so specify a 400–500 kg model. Load is never spread perfectly evenly, particularly on an uneven floor.
  2. Pick the mounting. Flat frame and you can drill → top plate. Existing threaded socket or an avoidance of drilling → threaded stem. Tight corners → triangular plate.
  3. Match the wheel to the floor. Larger wheels roll better over expansion joints and swarf; softer treads (rubber, TPE) protect tile and epoxy; harder treads (nylon, PU) roll easier under load and resist oils and chips.
  4. Check the environment. Wash-down or chemicals → stainless steel. High heat, autoclave or freezer → flag it, as standard nylon has a working temperature range. Clean room → choose a non-shedding wheel and a sealed swivel.

If you send us the equipment weight, the mounting you have and the floor conditions, we will match a model and return a drawing. See the quote page.

Materials: bracket and wheel

Two decisions drive price, durability and weight: what the bracket is made from, and what the wheel is made from.

Part Material Why it matters
Bracket Die-cast aluminum (ADC12) Noticeably lighter than cast iron at the same rating, does not rust or flake, and leaves more of the rated load for your equipment instead of the caster itself
Bracket Stainless steel For wash-down, food processing and clean rooms
Bracket Galvanized steel Economical, corrosion treated, used on the DCST and light duty ranges
Wheel Nylon (PA6) Hard, low rolling resistance, resistant to oils, swarf and most chemicals
Wheel Polyurethane (PU) Quieter and kinder to floors, with high wear resistance
Wheel Rubber / TPE Grip and floor protection, for tiles, epoxy and quiet areas

Typical applications

Leveling casters are specified wherever equipment has to be repositioned during setup but stay locked down while working. The most common requests we receive are:

  • Welding and fixture tables — the pad stops the table rocking, so welds stay true (see DC-100F).
  • CNC machines, compressors and pumps — vibration isolation plus mobility for maintenance (DC-80F).
  • Tool cabinets and workbenches — low center of gravity models that will not tip when a drawer is pulled out (DC-800).
  • Medical and laboratory equipment — quiet, floor-friendly wheels with a stable operating position (DC-60F).
  • Food processing and clean rooms — stainless steel, wash-down capable (DCST series).
  • Engine hoists, scaffolding and racks — caster plus leveling in one unit saves a separate foot.

Frequently asked questions

What is a leveling caster?

A swivel caster wheel with a built-in adjustable leveling pad. Roll the equipment into position, then wind the pad down until it lifts the wheels off the floor and takes the load. The machine is then stable and level, with no rocking or wheel vibration.

What is the difference between a leveling caster and a Fuma wheel?

No technical difference. “Leveling caster” is the term used most in North America and Europe; “Fuma wheel” is the generic name widely used in Asia and on B2B marketplaces for the same caster-plus-adjustable-pad design. “Footmaster-style caster” is another common way of describing it.

How do I calculate the load capacity I need?

Divide the total equipment weight by the number of casters, then add 30–50%. A 1,200 kg machine on four casters needs at least 300 kg per caster, so choose a 400–500 kg model.

Should I choose a top plate or a threaded stem leveling caster?

Top plate when the equipment has a flat frame or leg you can bolt to — it carries the highest loads. Threaded stem when the equipment already has a threaded socket or tube, or when you want to avoid drilling.

What load capacities do you offer?

From 50 kg to 1,500 kg per unit. Top-plate DC-F and DC-FH cover 50–1,500 kg, threaded-stem DC-S cover 50–1,000 kg, low center of gravity DC-600 / DC-800 / DC-1000 cover 150–800 kg, and stainless steel DCST cover 272–590 kg.

What is the minimum order and lead time?

Standard models from a few hundred pieces; OEM and custom runs typically 5,000 pcs per model per size. Orders up to 2,000 pcs ship in about 10 days after deposit. Payment is flexible, usually T/T 30% deposit with the balance against copy of B/L.
